Invitation to a Journey

In his book, Invitation to a Journey, author M. Robert Mulholland Jr. writes,
Everyone is in a process of spiritual formation! Every thought we hold, every decision we make, every action we take, every emotion we allow to shape our behavior, every response we make to the world around us, every relationship we enter into, every reaction we have toward the things that surround us and impinge upon our lives ā€” all of these things, little by little, are shaping us into some kind of being. We are being shaped into either the wholeness of the image of Christ or a horribly destructive caricature of that image ā€” destructive not only to ourselves but also to others, for we inflict our brokenness upon them.
Everyone is in a process of spiritual formation.

Everyone!

Yet, one need only look around campus to realize that not everyone seems to be processing — or progressing — in the same ways or at the same rates.

And on one hand, that’s OK.

Everyone is on their own journey — and God works in different ways, and at different speeds, within each and every one of us.

But on the other hand, we can learn something by looking around at our fellow journeyers.

While some will encourage us, and spur us on to greater things; others will help us to understand that not everyone recognizes that this season of life counts. That right now matters.

In fact, there are plenty of students who seem to believe that they can think, speak, act, and live any way they want — and it’s not going to have an impact on them. Now or in the future.

But the reality is that this just isn’t true. It’s not possible.

And so if we desire to be shaped and formed more and more into the likeness of Jesus, we need to become more intentional in how we choose to live.

Although we are all made in the image of God, we will not automatically think, speak, act, and live in accordance with our Creator’s ways.

So we must choose to journey — daily — with God.

We must accept His invitation to journey — together — and not on our own.

And as we journey, we must be willing to yield our lives to His Divine leading.

You’ve been invited to a journey — are you ready to get going?
